LSSU announces Graymont Community Development Fund award recipients The Graymont Community Development Fund, which is administered by Lake Superior State University, has announced which entities will receive a portion of $95,000 in grant money for the 2017 cycle. The list includes Engadine Consolidated Schools’ The Whole Child - Year 2 program, the West Mackinaw Health Association’s West Mackinaw Dental Clinic and Trout Lake Township, which can use the money for its planned electrical upgrades at Trout Lake Park. Hendricks Township will get a share for phase two of its additions to its fire hall building, while Feneley McNeil Nesbit American Legion Post 290 in Engadine has landed some cash to help replace its roof. Finally, Hudson Township will receive some funding for its fire hall garage and the Michigan Karst Conservancy is getting some help with its Fiborn Quarry History Display Update. LSSU Provost David Roland Finley said this was the university’s first year administering the fund for Graymont. The two came together through LSSU alumnus P.J. Stoll, the plant manager for Graymont’s Port Inland facility. “Economic development is really what we strive to facilitate as an academic institution,” Finley added. Graymont’s Community Development Fund was established after the company acquired some land for the construction of a limestone quarry near Rexton through a land swap with the Department of Natural Resources. Finley said the limestone market was soft and Graymont decided to postpone construction of the quarry. But officials wanted the transaction to offer some benefits in the meantime, so the company created the fund to allocate $95,000 annually to help local communities. The fund is currently expected to operate for four years. A 12-member committee reviewed 19 applications for 2017’s allocations, which were accepted between April and July. Finley said committee members based their decisions on a project’s proximity to the planned quarry site and the number of people it would benefit. Organizers hope to begin the application period for the 2018 round of grants soon, probably by January.

At least one prominent Sault Ste. Marie organization is not singing the praises of Sault Area Hospital’s recently minted policy that places restrictions on Christmas decorations. Ornaments do grace Sault Ste. Marie’s chief health-care facility, but, essentially, management approval is now needed before trimmings are put up. “To us, it’s discouraging,” Steve Summers, Knights of Columbus Council 932 Grand Knight, told The Sault Star Thursday. “I suspect the pendulum’s swinging a little bit too far, to the point we’re being so accommodating that we’re giving away our own culture. Our moral values, our Christian values, are being eroded in the name of freedom.” Sault Area Hospital denies this, contending its ultimate aim is to take everyone into consideration. “The hospital is not trying to exclude Christmas, but be inclusive and make sure that we’re reflective and thinking about everybody,” Brandy Sharp Young, SAH manager of communications and volunteer resources, told The Sault Star Thursday. For instance, the hospital’s foundation has its Tree of Hope up, decorations can be found in some areas of the Great Northern Road facility and there is talk that Old St. Nick, himself, may make an appearance, possibly Friday. “The intention of the policy was we’re reflective of who is coming into our hospital and being inclusive,” Sharp Young said. The policy, not provincially mandated but part of a revised SAH signage guidelines ushered in last August, outlines an “overall direction and process” for the displaying of signage, and includes a process for the displaying of holiday and seasonal decorations. Limiting ornaments pegging any number of events or holidays in areas often visited by the general public, the hospital says, fosters a “safe and welcoming” space. Exceptions must be approved by management, including holiday-themed fundraising, and Christmas decorations in inpatient units and areas not regularly used by the public must also be approved by SAH brass. “By having an approval process for the displaying of holiday and seasonal decorations, we ensure that we are inclusive and respectful of the diversity of our staff, patients, families, physicians and volunteers,” Sharp Young said. Knights of Columbus, a fraternal service club for Roman Catholic men, is a strong advocate of the “Keep Christ in Christmas” theme; ads can be scene here on city buses and there are signs throughout the community.http://www.saultstar.com/2017/12/14/sault-area-hospital-says-guidelines-are-geared-to-foster-inclusivity-knights-of-columbus-contends-christian-values-being-eroded
